Welcome to ScienceThe Science Department at Sir William Robertson Academy aims to provide a broad and balanced curriculum accessible to all pupils, regardless of ability, gender, race or culture that builds upon the primary curriculum in a continuous and progressive manner throughout key stages 3 and 4.
We aim to provide well resourced facilities that are both safe and stimulating for the pupils. This facilitates not only further development of their scientific knowledge and understanding, but also allows for the spark of curiosity and enthusiasm towards Science and the world around them; in essence helping to develop tomorrow’s scientists.
The department seeks to develop investigative and problem solving skills in the pupils as well as enhancing informed attitudes. In order to reach their full potential the pupils have access to a challenging and varied curriculum, tailored to individual and group needs. The pupils are encouraged to put knowledge and understanding of the application of Science in a social and ethical context and to make evaluations.
The Science Curriculum
All students at Sir William Robertson Academy study a balanced course in Science at both Key Stages 3 and 4. At Key Stage 3 all pupils take 3 hours of science per week, following our own scheme of work. Currently, Year 7 groups are the first to follow the new schemes of work which have a greater emphasis on personal, learning and thinking skills. Groups are taught by one teacher. At Key Stage 4, most pupils take a minimum of 4 hours of science per week in Year 10 and follow the AQA GCSE ‘Science’ course. In Year 11 this rises to 5 hours a week where pupils follow AQA GCSE ‘Additional Science’. This route allows pupils to acquire two GCSE’s in Science and is taught by subject specialists on a rotation basis. Some pupils opt to follow the Triple Science option throughout Years 10 and 11 consisting of AQA GCSE Biology, AQA GCSE Chemistry and AQA GCSE Physics. This leads to the award of three separate GCSE’s and takes 7 hours of Science per week taught by subject specialists.
