What is Sociology?
Over the two years students will look at how society works – looking at institutions such as the family, education to social class structures.
Assessment: GCSE – OCR Specification
There is one entry level for the GCSE. Students will complete three externally assessed units. Two of these units are equally weighed at 25% and one is weighted at 50%. The units consist of:
Sociology Basics (25%) – Students are encouraged to develop an understanding of sociological evidence and research processes. Assessment is through one 60 minute exam. One section is based on research methods and one based on key concepts.
Socialisation, Culture and Identity (50%) – This unit offers six optional sections from which we will study at least three:
- Family
- Education
- Mass media
- Work
- Crime and deviance
- Youth
Applying sociological research techniques (25%) – This unit allows students the freedom to express their Sociological knowledge and interest in topic areas. Assessment is through one 60 minute examination compromising of 2 sections. The assessment is based on a pre-released investigation.
There is no need to worry about not having any knowledge of Sociology – as long as you have an opinion and are not afraid to use it you will progress well within the two years. |
